Ba'al Zevuv

Ba'al Zevuv

Random Brain Activity

Beelzebub is a prince of demons, and Lord of Flies. His connection to Belphegor was brought to my attention by a reader many months ago, an Israeli who explained some of the Hebrew in the names. It seems Ba'al Peor, Lord of Opening, was served by Zvuvim, or flies. Because of the poo, see? Thus, Ba'al Zevuv means literally "Lord of Flies."

I found this quote about him interesting. He'd fit right into this day and age:
"I said to him, 'What are your activities?' He replied, 'I bring destruction by means of tyrants; I cause the demons to be worshiped alongside men; and I arouse desire in holy men and select priests. I bring about jealousies and murders in a country, and I instigate wars." - TSol 6:1-4

Also, what the hell happened to ASKING QUESTIONS during a confirmation hearing? I spent this morning watching C-Span. When Orin Hatch and Chuck Grassley, two delightful republican senators, were given an opportunity to delve into Supreme Court nominee Sam Alito, they felt their time would be better spent complimenting him. I guess this is a show of partisan loyalty, but the sake of dignity, you'd think they'd at least PRETEND to have a question. I shouldn't be surprised any more, but they keep finding ways to make me wonder how much they cost.
